Beyond the Basic Estate Planning for Widows

Grief sabotages thinking and decision making. In this session, Kathleen Rehl will talk in depth about what advisors need to understand about helping widows through their financial transitions, as well as what to say and what not to say in the process.

Join us and learn how to avoid pushing the wrong financial issues after the death of a client’s spouse, tips for handling the three stages of widowhood, and what Kathleen’s research tells us about how financial planning affects widows’ outlook and confidence in their financial future.

After the program we will enjoy cocktails and hors d'oeuvres at Red Door No. 5. The rich history of this restored firehouse will be the unique backdrop for great networking and food prepared by Metropolitan Ministries Inside the Box Catering.

Speaker Profiles

Kathleen M. Rehl, PhD, CFP®
Rehl Financial Advisors

Kathleen Rehl owned Rehl Financial Advisors for 18 years before retiring to an active 6-year encore career, empowering widows with her speaking, writing, and research. As a financial planner, she specialized in working with widows and philanthropic planning. After her husband died, Kathleen wrote Moving Forward on Your Own: A Financial Guidebook for Widows. Now in her 77th year, she’s happily “reFired.” That’s not traditional retirement as she pens legacy stories and poems, plus assists selected nonprofits to grow their endowments. Recently returning to her love of teaching, she’s adjunct faculty at The American College of Financial Services, in their Chartered Advisor in Philanthropy® program. Years ago, Kathleen served as a gift planning officer and, before that, a university professor. Her work has been featured in the New York Times, Wall Street Journal, Next Avenue, Kiplinger’s, CNBC, Humble Dollar, Sixty & Me, AgeBuzz, and others. As a zesty Boomer practicing positive aging, Kathleen gratefully continues to create and contribute… joyfully using her skills and experiences to encourage others to live their best life, too.
